October 1 6:00AM—Ahhh, a sleep in. Relaxing breakfast, chance for a shower and only a short walk in the morning. We spotted Rock Wallabies and a few people had a swim, skipped stones and we all indulged in the now famous “Black and Gold Fruit Cake” and oranges. On the walk we told Petra about an Australian tradition—”Pinch and a Punch for the first of the month”. And then about “Hit and a Kick for being so Quick”. Petra got Christian with the Pinch and Punch before he knew what was going on. Next second she was disappearing into the distance with a cloud of red dust rising. She became “Pinch” and Christian “Punch”. Back to the truck and onto the next stop—The Ochre Pits. Amazing the colour that comes from these sedimentations. Onto Ellery Creek Bighole for a swim and lots of fun jumping off the bank. Nicole was “chicken” jumping off the bank—Czech translation of “chicken” sounds like “Scrub” - her name from then on. Elyse didn’t want to dive—she became “Diver” and her brother Warwick dove so far he looked like “Tarzan”.
From there we headed to Standley Chasm. Again another short walk and amazing. Here is where Horst from Germany got his name “Boing”. He asked to have a photo taken of him with his camera and said “boing” for pressing the button. After ice cream and drinks we headed to Wallace Rockhole and really nice clean aboriginal community. One of the locals took us on a short walk to explain the plants, rock carvings and tools. We had to watch Petr—he kept wanting to eat everything. Back to camp for a Schnitzel dinner, a chance for Becky to teach Petr a little English and the funniest show I’ve seen. Becky, Nicole and Elyse decided to do a play on how everyone on the tour got their nicknames. See the nicknames link the details. So funny—my sides were hurting, I had tears in my eyes and I couldn’t get my breath. The “Unkie Pete” song at the end was so good. Finished the beers with coffees around the fire and off to bed for a 6.00AM start. |
