Sunrise at Ayers Rock September 29 4.30 AM!!! - “Get out of bed it’s time to watch the sun rise over Uluru”. Quick breakfast and into the backseat of the truck—this became our spot for the trip and very comfortable too—except for a couple of occasions but you’ll have to read on to learn about that. After dropping half the group off at the walk around the rock the rest of us headed for the climb. It was closed—winds too strong and forecast to high temperatures. So back to the start of the walk around the rock. Easy flat walk of about 8k with wonderful views of the rock and the sun rising. Back to the van for more oranges and our first “Black and Gold Fruit Cake”. Soon to become the hallmark morning tea for the tour. Before heading back to camp we stopped at an amazing cave with aboriginal painting (not Art—it’s probably more like drawing on a blackboard in school than art—the cave was like a classroom). We then stopped at a beautiful waterhole at the base of the rock.
Back to the camp, pack the bags, quick sandwiches for lunch, clean the site and off we go on the road to Kings Creek Station with a stop at Curtin Springs. Very important stop too—last beer buying for 3 days. Just about everyone, except Rob, fell asleep on the way to Kings Creek Station. We arrived late in the afternoon just in time to see Brisbane win over Essendon and have a quick swim. Beautiful sunset and emu legs (chicken legs in honey or curry) for dinner cooked in camp ovens. Delicious.
Early night again for a 4.30AM start for Kings Canyon. Interesting night though—Kim stayed up most of the night listening to two tiny mice. She found them about 3 AM. Turns out Les and Joan from England had an interesting night too. Les trapped a “snake” in the dark. Turned out to be a leather belt. |
