Europe Holiday July 2007

Saturday July 14 - Big drive from Panzano to Sorrento via Herculaneum and Pompeii.  It took 40 minutes drive to reach the autostrada on twisty, winding roads.  Lucky to reach 60kph.  Once on the Autostrada it was 130kph+.

First stop was an autogrill just south of Rome for a bite to eat.  So hot.

Just before Naples we turned onto A3 and shortly after reached Erclano which leads to Herculaneum.  What a run down town.  It was hard to tell the difference between the ruins from 79AD and the homes of today.  What made it worse was a garbage strike.

After a couple of hours walking the ruins it was back in the car and heading to Pompeii.

We spent 3 hours walking around Pompeii - the theatre, stadium, numerous homes, market places, bottegas - all amazing.  It was closing time when we left via the Villa with a dog we named "San Gimi" following.  Bit of a walk back to the car and hit the road for Sorrento.

Not that far but very slow going on the narrow road.  It was dark by the time we reached Sorrento and the town was closed to traffic for some kind of street party.  The Police kindly let us drive into the town and get close to the hotel to drop our bags.  Checked in than hit the, according to Rick Steves, best Pizza place in town right in the middle of Piazzo Taso.
