Extreme Corporate Challenge I - The Desert (cont'd)
Day 2 - Idracowra to Lillee Creek
Day 2 saw a 5km time trial by one member
from each team - the winner being UECOMM. After this the group did a 75km stage
in the morning, temperature was 29 degrees, strong wind and most teams took 6
hours to complete. It was very, very taxing and it also tested the team
dynamics. In the early stages of the track it included some corrugations and
sand dunes, which put a huge emphasis on the overall endurance of the teams.
The afternoon stage consisted of a 14km ride to camp with each team convinced it
was going to be a 25km ride. Some teams opted to complete the entire 2 stages
with little rest between due to the heavy demands placed upon them.
Some of the teams obviously were not up
to the challenge and they didn’t finish as a team of 4, which is a prerequisite
for a successful completion or they get penalised by dropping 10 points. You
are therefore only as strong as your weakest team member. Most of the teams are
now beginning to work on the fact that to survive in this event and to meet the
challenge of completion they need to work out how to focus on the present and
not the future. There is also a lot of levels of insecurities which have been
created by today’s stage. They were not told the distance, so they didn’t know
what they were up for. The reason for this is to keep them in their insecure
zone. It’s an interesting observation to see corporate executives who are
constantly supported by information and technology to deal with a totally
different environment. Some of the teams are beginning to correlate the
philosophy of the event to what children go through in general throughout their
childhood.
Most common injuries to date are repetitive type injuries at
this stage ie. ITB injury, knee strains, blisters etc. Some teams are also
starting to realise that today it’s your injury and tomorrow it might be someone
else – leading to stronger teaming.
Overall morale is really high amongst
the group’s riders, which is reinforced around the camp fire at night.
