Working Week Series - Killingworth, June 19, 2005

Sunday morning 5 am, Richard, John, Peter and Yarro meet for a quick trip to Killingworth, 1.5 hr drive from Beecroft. We arrived nice and early securing a good spot near the transition area. Richard registered as a solo rider to keep Rodney in check also going it alone. Team Richard – Home alone!. We elected the old guys to start the race John O and Richard did the run(walk) to the start. Traffic was a major issue as the bike pick up point was narrow and the run was very short.

The track was smooth, fast and heaps of fun. There were only a few spots that were difficult to climb. The lap times ranged from 29 to 34 minutes. There were a number of narrow bridges to cross. These bridges were constructed from two main pine log beams about 3-4 metres in length and 800mm apart covered with steel fence mesh. By the end of the race there was a distinct valley in the bridge structure.

After leaving the transition area a flat fast track meandered through the bush, within the first few k’s you came across a very steep drop off around 3 meters in height, probably 30 degrees resulting in a great rush. The track then gently snaked through lightly wooded bush. At the 4 k mark you came out onto a fire road for less than a k then back into fast single track, every now and then you came across a small jump to break up your rhythm. There was only one switchback that caused problems at the 6-7 k mark then the track went back into a fast smooth single track.

We all completed 5 x 9.7k laps, Richard’s plan was to make sure that Rodney was kept in sight and honest. Richard completed his first 3 laps, then had short break of an hour or so then went out for 2 lighting fast laps and retired satisfied.

In conclusion, next year, we should all go solo and have heaps of fun.
