FURTHER CYCLING IN THE BARRINGTON TOPS

The rides described in the preceding pages cover the high lights of the main plateau area. Plenty of opportunities exist for variations of these rides including different access points for people who (a) are willing to endure a 1200 m climb to reach the tops, or (b) can organise a car-shuttle to eliminate back-tracking. The general idea would be to start at the top, e.g. Polblue, tour the Barrington Tops, and cycle down either via The Corker to the Allyn River, or The Mountaineer to Dungog. Over a kilometre of altitude would be lost in one of the longest, steepest downhills possible in the country.

One sector of the Barrington Tops not described in this section is the south-east, centred on the Chichester State Forest. There are many camping areas here with great mountain look outs, streams, and rainforest vegetation. This section happens to be the most easily accessible from public transport through Dungog.
